A helicopter reportedly carrying several people crashed in New York City's East River on Sunday night and rescues were under way, officials said, Fox News reported.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene at the scene and divers have been deployed, the New York City Police Department said on Twitter.

A spokesman for Mayor Eric Phillips confirmed the deaths.

It's not immediately known how many people were aboard the aircraft at the time.

The helicopter, a private charter hired for a photo shoot, went down near Gracie Mansion, the mayoral residence. A small armada of rescue boats searched for survivors.

Within minutes, the helicopter disappeared beneath the waves, witness John Magers, 24, told The Post.

"Its' cold water. It was sinking really fast", Mary Lee, 66, told the New York Post.

The Eurocopter AS350 went down in the waters between the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens just after 7 p.m. ET, according to a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman. Crashes are not uncommon.

NY has seen helicopters crash before, including one in October 2011 that claimed the life of British woman as she celebrated a 40 birthday.
