This week is the university's spring break, so classes were not in session. Police had been negotiating with the man earlier, in a standoff that began at around 10:30 Tuesday morning.

Police shot and killed an armed man this afternoon at Panera Bread in Princeton following a lengthy standoff.

Municipality of Princeton police have surrounded an armed man inside the Panera restaurant on Nassau Street, across from campus. Customers and employees were able to flee the building, and police secured the perimeter of the restaurant. Police on the scene said the man is held up inside the eatery.

Some neighboring buildings were shut down and two campus buildings near Panera were evacuated as a precaution, the school said. During the interview, the gunman could be heard over the police scanner saying "no one is coming through those doors".

Officers said the area surrounding the restaurant has been closed and the situation has been contained.
