Rio will be assuming the charge of Nagaland chief minister for the fourth time. However, this time, the equations have changed as the saffron party has terminated its alliance with the NPF, it's ally of 15 years, to go with the newly floated NDPP of former chief minister Neiphiu Rio.
While the BJP won 12 seats, the NDPP bagged 18 seats in the 60-member assembly. While BJP contested 20 seats, the rest of the 40 candidates were fielded by NDPP.
The latter, however, was back in contention after Mr. Zeliang was forced to quit in February 2017 following violence over the NPF government's bid to hold civic polls with 33% quota for women.
Even with just one seat - in 2008 it had seven - NPF made it a part of its government. The BJP too managed to strengthen its profile by absorbing a number of independents and Congress leaders. BJP leader and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the BJP can not go back to Naga People's Front (NPF).
NDPP leader Neiphiu Rio has been unanimously elected as the leader of the People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) at a joint meeting of NDPP, BJP, JD (U) and Independent, which was held at Kohima on Tuesday.
"After coming to know of the decision of BJP severing ties with NPF, I am submitting the resignation of the council of ministers headed by me today with a request to accept the same with immediate effect", TR Zeliang said in his resignation letter. Such a coalition government is likely to be more stable and lead to a more cordial and congenial political atmosphere in the region. "It is good for the Northeast, good for India", he said. "Even though Rio met the governor, as of now, the hung assembly situation continues".
PRO Raj Bhavan stated that BJP legislators also informed the Governor that Y Patton has been elected as the BJP Leader for the 13th House of the NLA.
The NPF tried to swing the BJP in its favour, with Zeliang even reportedly threatening to withdraw from the alliance government in Manipur. The NPP will have alliance only with the NPF for formation of government.
He then joined the Naga People's Front and formed the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) along with the BJP and other regional parties.
"We are confident of forming the government". From a call to boycott the polls before a solution to the vexed Naga insurgency issue to the church issuing a diktat not to "pierce the heart of Jesus" by voting the BJP to power, the state saw it all.
