Both India and China are ancient civilisations with global influence, Modi said, adding that India will work with China to enhance high-level exchanges, deepen bilateral ties, strengthen coordination and cooperation in worldwide affairs to further a closer developmental partnership between the two countries and promote global and regional peace and development, according to the report.

"All acts and schemes to split China are doomed to failure and will be condemned by the people and punished by history", Xi told the closing session of the National People's Congress in Beijing.

Taiwan in response urged China to shelve its mindset of "forceful intimidation" and pursue a breakthrough in cross-strait relations.

"Dear President Xi Jinping, congratulations on getting re-elected as the President of the People's Republic of China", Modi had said in his message posted in his account on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.

A major government reshuffle was also unveiled, and Xi placed his trusted allies - including new Vice-President Wang Qishan - in key positions concerning the economy, relations with the United States and the battle against corruption. His former anti-corruption chief Wang Qishan was appointed vice president, while his key economic adviser Liu He became deputy premier. Some of those policies, such as forced technology transfers and intellectual property theft, have drawn sharp criticism from Donald Trump.

Voicing hopes that Beijing and the United States could avoid a trade war, Premier Li Keqiang told the close of the annual parliament session that China would open its economy further, so that foreign and Chinese firms can compete on an equal footing.

This year's National People's Congress kicked off on March 5 and will finish on Tuesday.

"Both India and China are ancient civilisations with global influence, " Modi said, adding that India would work with China to enhance high-level exchanges, deepen bilateral ties, strengthen coordination and cooperation in worldwide affairs to further a closer developmental partnership and promote global and regional peace and development.

The government's propaganda machine worked in overdrive to nurture a cult of personality around Xi and stamp out dissenting views during the two-week session.

Speaking to the lawmakers, Xi Jinping called on all efforts to tackle the challenges and realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
