Amazon chooses Best Buy to sell Alexa-enabled smart TVs

Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly and Amazon's Jeff Bezos came together Tuesday to discuss the deal

Amazon and Best Buy team up to sell smart TVs

These new TVs will be exclusively sold at Best Buy's retail stores across the country and they will obviously be available for purchase through Amazon.com as well with Best Buy being the third-party seller.

There are more than 10 models to choose from at launch, available at Best Buy's online and Amazon stores. The Fire Edition TVs by Insignia and Toshiba are created to work seamlessly with Amazon's own voice assistant Alexa. They will be branded as "Amazon Fire TV Edition" and have all functionality of the Amazon Fire TV software, including integration with Amazon Alexa. For the upcoming models, customers will have to press a microphone button on their remote, or add Amazon Echo speaker to their overall setup, to call up Alexa.

At first glance, the partnership seems one-sided in favor of Amazon, but it appears to be a good deal for Best Buy, too.

The announcement marks another collaboration between the two rival retailers, with Best Buy already selling many Amazon devices in its stores and bringing a limited set of its inventory for sale via voice shopping on Amazon's Alexa.

"We believe Fire TV Edition further strengthens the growing connection between home theater, home automation and voice control", stated Hubert Joly, Best Buy chairman and CEO. Built-in apps will give you access to popular services including Prime Video (of course), Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and PlayStation Vue (among others). It's unclear if Best Buy will pay a standard commission as an Amazon merchant, or whether a different deal was negotiated. Best Buy is quickly changing to meet customer demand in the smart home space.

Amazon is guided by four principles: customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking. Amazon, like Google, uses their digital assistant to meet the desires of the end user as closely as possible. For more information, visit www.amazon.com/about and follow @AmazonNews. The products will be available in the United States and Canada starting this summer.

Best Buy will sell them in its stores and online in the US, and later from Canada.
