Charges Filed Against Mom In Car Fire Involving Kids

Mother charged, accused of setting car on fire with her three daughters inside, police say

Mother, 31, is arrested after setting her car on fire with her three daughters inside, shouting 'we're going to see Jesus', before bystanders intervened

According to police, witnesses reported seeing the mother trying to set the auto on fire in the 4300 block of W. Orem. Bystanders told police they saw the children - ages 9, 11, 13 - in the vehicle while Segovia was saying in Spanish, "Let's go to heaven". Witnesses allegedly heard Segovia making an alarming remark to her children after the fire started. Witnesses said the mother fell while attempting to flee, KHOU reported. "When they approached the auto, they heard the female say something to the effect of 'we're going to see Jesus, '" said HPD Lt. Larry Crowson. She tried to run away, but tripped and officers arrested her after a short struggle, police said. Police say the woman eventually chose to leave the area with her kids but was captured by Precinct 7 deputy constables.

Segovia is facing three counts of aggravated assault of a family member. The children were unharmed and police haven't said who they are with right now.

Houston Fire Department arson investigators were also called to the scene. Reports indicated that she will undergo a mental health evaluation.
