Shortly after the Bush family released its statement, Texas Governor Greg Abbott called on the state to pray for the entire Bush family.

"[Mrs. Bush] has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care", said Jim McGrath, a spokesman for the family.

Longtime Republican political consultant Rick Wilson described Bush as "an icon" whose "fierce love for her family transcended politics".

Barbara Bush, the 92-year-old First Lady, is in failing health and has now made a decision to stop receiving any further medical care, transitioning to "comfort care", according to a statement from the Office of George H.W. Bush.

People are generally aware that Bush Sr. suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease that has him in a wheelchair; however, most were not aware of the former first lady's health problems, which started about two years ago. Early past year, they both spent time in separate rooms in the same Houston hospital, both being treated for breathing problems. Bush had been hospitalized for bronchitis treatment in January 2017. Months earlier, he was a Houston's Methodist Hospital for 16 days, also for pneumonia.

Mrs Bush played an active role whilst first lady, championing the cause of adult literacy among others.

The former President, who also served as vice president from 1981 to 1989, also broke a bone in his neck in 2015 when he fell at the family summer compound in Kennebunkport, Maine. Barbara Pierce was born in NY and met her future husband at age 16.
