"Most are waiting for a kidney", said Boger, who noted that kidneys are the human organs that are most often donated by living donors.

"That question would you like to register as an organ or tissue donor is a voluntary question", said Boger, who noted that the state Department of Public Health is now running a campaign educating people about organ and tissue donation.

Campbell spoke briefly about her children having registered as organ donors, and how they encouraged their friends to do the same.

"You can help Tennova save lives by signing up to be an organ donor through the state registry website".

"The objective of the green ribbon campaign is to bring awareness to the fact that we need more donors, and how much good it does to be a donor", Kevin Allen, public affairs coordinator at Midwest Transplant Network, says.

Michelle Vanderhart, a mother of three in Fort MacCleod, Alta., said her two-year-old son Mason is one of the people for whom the decision to register could mean the difference between life and death. "The doctors that work to save your life aren't the same people coming in that are working to save other lives by procuring organs", Allen explains. She stood beside City Councilor Colin LePage, whose son Christopher had also registered as an organ donor prior to his untimely death.

A spokesperson for Manitoba's organ donation agency said there has been a "remarkable" jump in signups since the Friday crash, with more than 300 people registering as organ donors. "Each of us has such power to save lives, to soften the grief of our families, to take away from them the burden of not knowing what our wishes are".

"We always work with the families".

"It's such an easy thing that everyone can try to do to help", Stokke, 25, said in a phone interview. "We're there from the beginning of the process to as much as two years out or longer for families that want to keep in contact with us or want to come to events that honor those donors".

On Friday April 6, 22,949 people were signed up.

You can register to be an organ donor online at sharelifemidwest.com or at the DMV when obtaining or renewing a driver's license.
