Modi breaks silence over Kathua, Unnao rapes

Amid nation-wide outrage over the gruesome incidents of rape in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday broke his silence and said no criminal would be spared and that "our daughters will get justice".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finally broken the silence in the Kathua and Unnao gang rape cases.

"We are here against crimes being committed against women, against rapes, violence and murder and the government must act on this".

The Opposition party has also alleged that the accused were being "protected" by the authorities concerned.

Union Minister Smriti Irani on Friday attacked Congress President Rahul Gandhi in his home constituency here in Uttar Pradesh. On Thursday, Rahul tweeted and lead a midnight candlelight march to protest crimes against women in the national capital.

Priyanka was accompanied by her husband Robert Vadra and their children, who were also present at the march along with other Congress leaders, party workers and students. Her body was found in the same area a week later.

The Congress leader said the BJP can inaugurate as many memorials as they like, "but the fact is that they are reducing sub-plans, financial allocations". "But as a political class (sic), we need to reflect the mood of the country". He said Modi's slogan of "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" was a correct slogan.

The Congress was trying to stage a protest the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu's Kathua district. The chargesheet in the case names eight people, including a retired government employee and three police officers who allegedly tried to destroy forensic evidence by washing the girl's clothes.

Singhvi added: "Look at Lekhi's language - 'You see their plan, first shout minority-minority, then Dalit-Dalit, and now women-women.' This shows the mindset of the ruling party. Our daughters will definitely get justice".

Both the Unnao and Kathua rape cases have a marked similarity in the sense that in both cases the assailants have been identified, yet justice is yet to be served.

The protesting bar members demanded that the case is transferred from Kathua.

Amid heightened public anger, the CBI tonight arrested MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on the directions of the Allahabad High Court.
