Kim's nukes have become rapidly more risky over the past few years, firing scores of missiles and last year and detonating an H-bomb.

"Our written evidence sets out where we are in dealing with that threat, but of course while we judge that Kim's offensive cyber-capability is mainly directed towards South Korea, the consequences of irresponsible use of viruses and cyber-weaponry are unpredictable by their very nature, as we saw with the WannaCry virus", Howe noted.

Chinese officials were not immediately able to comment.

They don't think Kim Jong-un is likely to press his small red button, though, as the committee, in a quite frank discussion about the possibility of nuclear armageddon, adds: "It will be obvious to Kim Jong-un that initiating a nuclear exchange is bound to lead to North Korea's annihilation: the polar opposite of his objective of regime survival".

There has been a pressing need for the denuclearisation of North Korea by Japan, the US, China and South Korea.

Kim's predecessors, grandfather Kim Il-sung and father Kim Jong-il, both promised not to pursue nuclear weapons but secretly maintained programs to develop them, culminating in the North's first nuclear test in 2006 under Kim Jong-il.

South Korean officials have said the summit will be focused on disarming North Korea of nuclear weapons, although the North hasn't officially confirmed this through its state-run media.

Another source in Dangdong, the Chinese border town, reported the arrival of busloads of young female workers from North Korea.

The MPs described Mr Kim as "ruthless but rational".

Officials from the two sides will meet again on Saturday for another round of working-level talks to discuss setting up a hotline between the leaders of North and South Korea.

Some analysts have said Trump's willingness to meet Kim handed Pyongyang a diplomatic win, as the United States had insisted for years that any such summit be preceded by North Korean steps to denuclearize.

The select committee report also covers the cyber threat posed by North Korea - which was blamed for the WannaCry ransomware attack which struck computers at NHS trusts a year ago.

'Nevertheless, the Wannacry attack highlighted basic vulnerabilities in United Kingdom information technology systems.

"North Korea has shown an utter lack of concern about who gets hurt by such attacks".

One source in China's Jilin Province said hundreds of North Korean women were seen in the area.

Trump and Kim are expected to have a sitdown for a major peace summit during May.
