The Opportunity in Front of Jalen Hurts

Teams across football would kill for a quarterback who'd get them to that point-no matter that Hurts wasn't the primary architect of Alabama's success.

Crimson extended its lead early in the second quarter when Jones and wide receiver Chadarius Townsend connected on the biggest play of the game.

Hurts completed 19 of his 37 pass attempts for 195 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

"I was not disappointed in the way (Hurts) played", Alabama coach Nick Saban said.

Saban emphasized that the disparity in the two quarterbacks' performances could be attributed to the fact that Jones was competing against Alabama's second team defense, while Hurts was going against Alabama's first team defense.

For much of his time at Alabama, he's been the recipient of a level of criticism that's nowhere near normal for a player who lost the national title game as a true freshman and started every game of a title run as a sophomore.

The injury was disappointing for Saban and the rest of the Crimson Tide, but it's only a small hindrance in the grand scheme of the quarterback competition. But only one can start. The father of the Crimson Tide QB told Bleacher Report that his son will likely transfer if he doesn't win the starting job. But since this might not be decided until September, it's impossible to predict what might happen. Mac Jones, the unheralded backup from Jacksonville, Florida, won a share of the spring game MVP honors by completing 23 of 35 passes for 289 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Robinson attended Hillcrest High School just seven miles from Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Paul Finebaum has been a big supporter of Jalen Hurts this offseason despite the mounting hype surrounding Tua Tagovailoa fresh off the rising sophomore's epic second-half performance in the National Championship Game. "We've known what he can do, he just had his shot today and he made the most of it".

Bulovas redshirted last season while then-senior Andy Pappanastos proved inconsistent, especially from deep, connecting on 18 of 25 field goal with a long of 46 yards.

"We had the first offense playing against the first defense", Saban said.

"We look at it as our third scrimmage, but it's our final impression, both on the coaches and on the country", junior left tackle Jonah Williams said Thursday.
