Fast forward to 2018, Harvey has been demoted to the bullpen after four starts and an 0-2 record with a 6.00 ERA. NY has rotation depth at the major-league level. If there was any bright spot of this start, it was Harvey retiring 11 of the final 12 batters he faced before being replaced by Jerry Blevins in the seventh inning.
"I think there's a lot to still prove, but I believe that I took a step in the right direction", Harvey said, per MLB.com.
"They make the calls and whatever is best for everybody is what I need to do", he said. The team chose the latter, hoping Matt Harvey can regain his form. There's a good chance that he'll eventually get another opportunity to start, and if his results start to match his peripherals, he could have a solid season. Most notably, Callaway oversaw the transition of talented Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco from a starter role to the bullpen and back to the rotation.
The Mets, however, did not have room for him in the rotation. He's given up 26 hits, four of them home runs, in 21 innings.
The Mets would move on to the World Series for the first time since 2000 and Harvey would get the start in Game 1 against the Kansas City Royals. I think everybody wants to start.
It's bad enough when the manager will not make such a commitment, but the Mets pitching coach, Dave Eiland, made comments after the game suggesting the possibility of the Mets putting Harvey in the bullpen.
Harvey, 29, hasn't been the same pitcher since 2016, when he had season-ending surgery to fix thoracic outlet syndrome in right shoulder.
Harvey lobbied to remain in the rotation after the last of his three innings were scoreless. No pitcher in Mets history has finished with an ERA as high as Harvey's in 2017; 6.70.
Looks like he's either going to have to change his mindset or else he's not going to have a place to pitch in NY for very much longer.
"Get things going, then come back and dominate like I have in the past".
" We respect the delight and the passion that & rsquo; s a significant portion of exactly what & rsquo; s going to get him back to being a productive guy, & rdquo, and he's got.
