Delhi Daredevils skipper Gautam Gambhir has fallen on his sword after a sub-par start to the Indian Premier League for his side. From six matches, Gambhir has scored only 85 runs at a strike rate of 96.59.
Gambhir, in a press conference, said, he could not handle the pressure of the job. And looking at the position, I have chose to step down as DD captain. "I have to think where my game goes and I go as an individual", added the former India opener.
Daredevils have struggled with poor team balance and performances in the last few seasons. With the burden of captaincy lifted off his shoulders, Gambhir fired with the bat and led Delhi into the finals of the Ranji Trophy where they eventually lost to Vidarbha. I did it in Mumbai Indians and Gautam's made a decision to do the right thing. At times it can backfire as well because sometimes you are too keen or desperate to do so. "That could be one reason I could handle it more then than now", he said. It is just that we have not been able to put it together. For someone of his stature and cricketing record, to take a decision like this is incredible. Delhi, who are languishing at the bottom of the points table, will be led by batsman Shreyas Iyer with immediate effect.
"I$3 have been in the same situation years ago".
Ponting remained optimistic about the team's chances to make the play-offs.
"Absolutely my decision. I was the one who initiated the meeting (with the team owners)". It takes and shows a lot of character. He's a terrific young man who I can see has a huge future in the game and huge future as leader of the Delhi side.
As tough as it might be, it gives us a fresh start to perform from hereon. After that 91 not out, Roy managed six runs in two innings.
Delhi Daredevils lost five of the six matches it has played so far in the Indian Premier league 2018 and was now ranked last in the points table. They have played six matches and won five. "I was not good enough and that is all", he added. I had to take responsibility. "Very much a #DilDIlli", Gautam tweeted. "And obviously Gautam's chose to do the right thing", Ponting explained.
The new captain at the helm, Iyer too echoed Gambhir's statements. The DD management picked Iyer as the new captain and he will take charge for the remainder of the tournament.
"I absolutely believe we got the group to turn it around". "I am aware that I have not got runs for my team". DareDevils CEO Hemant Dua and coach Ricky Ponting were also present.
