UP: Miscreants vandalise Ambedkar's statue in Allahabad, third such incident in March

Confirming the incident, the police said the statue was found decapitated in Ambedkar Park in Trivenipuram area of Jhunsi in Allahabad by "unidentified miscreants". "We are aware of the matter and are trying to locate the suspects", said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Allahabad Aakash Kulhari, according to media reports.

Condemning the incident in a tweet, Samajwadi party state president Naresh Uttam said, "The feudal forces in the state under the BJP rule are constantly attacking the statues of Baba Saheb Ambedkar". This incident has taken place just two days after the Uttar Pradesh Government passed an order to officially introduce "Ramji" as the middle name of Dr BR Ambedkar in all documents and records in the state. This is the third such case of BR Ambedkar's bust being vandalized in Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated an elevated road which will connect Raj Nagar Extension to UP Gate in Ghaziabad on Friday.

Officials have been asked to take the help of peoples' representatives and eminent persons for ensuring peace and harmony and hold meetings with them.

The project was started by the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government, which was voted out of power in March past year.

The Uttar Pradesh administration has chose to introduce B.R. Ambedkar's middle name "Ramji" in all references to him in official correspondence and records, prompting Mayawati to question why the BJP governments do not write Narendra Damodardas Modi in advertisements. It is also not necessary that we should follow what the government says.

BJP leaders also describes this decision on Ambedkar' name in consononce with Chief Minister Adityanath's recent announcement that the government was exploring a quota within quota for the extremely backward castes (EBCs) and most backward Dalits- a move that BJP feels would thwart SP-BSP's strategy to consolidate all backward caste votes.

This jibe comes as the construction of the road commenced in November 2014, during the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government. An FIR was registered at Dhoomariyaganj police station under Sections 295, 153 (provocation to riot) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC.
