Yankees, Blue Jays lineups Saturday | Gary Sanchez sits

With a team full of 20-somethings, the New York Yankees played like seasoned veterans. He was terrific in his two career starts against the Blue Jays in his 2017 rookie season, limiting them to only one run in 11.1 innings.

But if Montgomery can be the pitcher he was Saturday, the Yankees' rotation looks considerably better, with Sabathia returning from the disabled list and Luis Severino, who starts Sunday, continuing to pitch like an ace.

NY was 5-4 after an 8-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on April 7 and then took almost five hours to drop an 8-7 decision in 12 innings the following day.

"He's hard to hit, " Boone said. With runners on first and third and nobody out, the lefthander struck out Hernandez in a second straight at-bat, this time on three pitches.

The follow-up to getting one game over has not gone well for the Yankees so far.

Backup Austin Romine will do the catching on Saturday.

"There's been a lot of communication between me and the hitting coaches", Andujar said through an interpreter. "I was used to being the youngest guy". Even his warmup before the game, he had great sink on his fastball, I thought the spin was there, he was aggressive. And now I'm nearly 30. And, after Neil Walker struck out for the Yankees' first out of the inning, Miguel Andujar's three-run double to left gave NY a 7-1 lead and ended Stroman's day.

The team needs to prepare for a four-game home series against in-division rival, the Toronto Blue Jays, which is set to begin April 19.

"It was Severino's day today".

"They can burn you in a heartbeat", Gibbons said. "It was no day at the beach".

First baseman Steve Pearce's RBI single in the fifth off Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery provided the Blue Jays' only run of the game. I don't see Severino being overly dominant in comparison to Garcia. "I knew this was going to be a tough challenge". The sloppy defence forced Sabathia from the contest after just 41/3 innings and 71 pitches. Didi Gregorius homers to center field. With two out and Smoak at the plate, NY catcher Gary Sanchez was charged with a passed ball, allowing Maile to score.

Stroman failed to get out of the sixth inning and the Yankees blew the game open with a seven-run frame. He also had two infield singles and finished 4 for 4 to raise his average to.308.

Former Yankee Curtis Granderson, pinch hitting for Aledmys Diaz, singled to shallow left to score Hernandez, making the score 4-3 NY.

"In Andujar and Gleyber, we know we've got two really good players".

Smoak is the Blue Jays hitter to give Severino the most trouble by going 5-for-14 (.357) with two homers and five RBIs and a 1.256 OPS. He missing the previous two games after fouling a ball off his left foot Thursday night in the series opener.

On Friday, there was a buzz around the visiting team clubhouse with the arrival of highly touted rookie infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. - who picked up two hits and three RBIs in his Major League Baseball debut for the Jays. Seven of his 12 hits this season have been for extra bases. In his 16.1 innings and 2-0 record this year, Garcia has a 3.86 ERA with 17 Ks and five BBs.

Miguel Andujar added four hits and an RBI for the Yankees, who took the four-game series 3-1, the first series loss this season for the Blue Jays. Justin Smoak is 1 for 4 against Montgomery, while Josh Donaldson is 0 for 2, and Kevin Pillar is 1 for 3.
