Trooper killed in Kashmir encounter, militants escaped

A paramilitary trooper belonging to India' Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed and a civilian wounded Saturday in a fierce gunfight with militants in restive Indian-occupied Kashmir.

Police said CRPF constable Mandeep Kumar of 182 battalion died during the gun battle inside a house at Wagum village in Pulwama early on Saturday.

A gunfight broke out between government forces and militants at a village in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Friday late night. Bashir Ahmad, the owner of the house where the militants were hiding, was hit by a bullet in his shoulder and was shifted to hospital, police said.

He said during the initial exchange of fire between terrorist and security forces, a CRPF jawan sustained injuries.

Security forces launched cordon and search operation in Pulwama following information about presence of militants.

"The terrorists fled under the cover of darkness", said a police officer.

As the joint security forces zeroed in on a house, where the militants were reported to be hiding, the militants resorted to indiscriminate firing. Sources said the operation was called off to avoid collateral damage as people were trying to march to the encounter site to help the terrorists escape.
