It's an ambitious system that could just work against the many teams at this World Cup who are happy to sit compact with two banks of four, but Peru aren't that.

Prodigious PSG striker Kylian Mbappe passed a significant footballing milestone by opening the scoring for France against Peru in the 34th minute of their Group C game.

Didier Deschamps' side, however, were aggressive in midfield, with Paul Pogba raising his level and the remarkable N'Golo Kante winning 13 tackles, after already winning the ball 14 times in the opening Group C game against Australia.

In contrast, Peru face Australia with their fate sealed and just pride to play for in front of their passionate and large following that has decamped to Russian Federation.

- Les Bleus have qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the sixth time in their last eight appearances - only failing to do so in 2002 and 2010.

"We will do all we can in the last match to win so we can finish better and the fans can celebrate one win in this World Cup", he added, looking ahead to the Incas' final game against Australia.

But when Peru were on a desperate attack, they all were ready to help at the back.

However, Peru were unable to find a way through and Ricardo Gareca's side - who have yet to find the net in Russian Federation - are certain to be knocked out.

"There was a mass of people, we are pained we are eliminated, we are sorry that we could not give them a better tournament", he said.

"I said before the tournament that everyone would be surprised with they their passion, and their love for the team".

"It is something that is unique and fantastic".

Many thought that the inevitable were to happen, and a goal for Peru at that stage of the game would have been well deserved.

To this end, Lloris is looking to France's second match in the 2014 World Cup - a 5-2 hammering of Swizterland with Giroud and Griezmann combining to devastating effect - as a benchmark.

Deschamps had clearly told his side, disappointing in beating Australia 2-1 in their opener, to go long and use Giroud's physicality.

As they did in losing narrowly to Denmark, Peru had plenty of chances, returning captain Paolo Guerrero firing at Hugo Lloris and Pedro Aquino clipping the post with a super strike from range.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is making his 100th worldwide appearance.

Peru employed further pressure on the French team but the latter showed its resolve and composure, especially in its own box.Long-range drives from Andre Carrillo and Luis Advincula went over the cross-bar as a desperate Peru continue to hunt for their equaliser.

France were nearly flawless in the first half, but their South American opposition showed some sheer determination and tenacity to push the game to the edges in the second half.
