Porsche Gives Taycan Name To Road Going Mission E Concept

Goodbye Mission E, Hello Porsche Taycan

Previewed in our exclusive images, the Taycan will bear a close resemblance to the concept in shape and style, but the rear-hinged back doors and matrix LED headlamps will be adapted for production.

The company also marked the occasion by revealing a 911 Speedster Concept, an open-top version of its iconic sports auto.

Ever since unveiling the concept, Porsche has been saying that the production version, which is expected to launch in 2019, will remain fairly similar. Full-electric and hybrid-electric cars will account for 25 percent of sales by 2025, the automaker said.

Before you worry that Porsche isn't Taycan care of business, the new name is actually pronounced tie-con. Porsche has also confirmed a sub-3.5 sec 0-100kph and a sub-12 sec 0-200kph acceleration time for the Taycan, but exact data has not been disclosed as yet.

Porsche has also shown a Mission E Cross Turismo concept, a wagon version of the electric auto.

The Mission E concept generates almost 600bhp via a lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, one on each axle.

Porsche is doubling down on electric cars, saying it will pour over €6 billion (about $7.1 million) into electromobility by 2022. There will likely be more extreme versions of this vehicle in the future.

The Porsche Taycan will debut the company's 800-volt charging system called Porsche Turbo Charging that offers ultra-fast charging.

Porsche on Friday introduced the official name of its battery electric vehicle as part of a ceremony in Europe marking 70 years of Porsche sports cars.

"Our new electric sports auto is strong and dependable; it's a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomizes freedom", says Oliver Blume, chairman of Porsche AG's executive board, in an offhand swat at the Tesla Model S. Particularly noteworthy is that the Taycan's 800V charging technology will enable 100km of range with just 4 min of charge. Porsche says a four minute charge will be good enough to deliver approximately 100 km (62 miles) of range.
