Joe Jackson (89), father of Michael Jackson dies

Joe Jackson, the father of Michael Jackson, has died at the age of 89, according to TMZ.

Late King of Pop Michael Jackson's 89-year-old father Joe has reportedly died.

Joe Jackson - the patriarch of the Jackson family - has died, TMZ reports.

Following Michael's highly-rated interview with Winfrey in 1993, Joe Jackson's reputation began to decline, though his wife and most of Michael's siblings publicly defended him in the face of abuse allegations. Then, in 2015, he was hospitalized after suffering another stroke on his 87th birthday.

Joseph Walter Jackson was born in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, on July 26, 1929, the eldest of four children.

In a second post, the 3T singer, 44, fought back against the trolls who criticized Joe in the wake of his death for being a strict disciplinarian when the Jackson kids were young. The result was a string of huge hits including "I Want You Back", "ABC", "I'll Be There" and the Michael Jackson solo release "Ben".

Through performances at local malls and talent shows, the group quickly cultivated a sterling local reputation, eventually taking top prize in a contest at the Apollo Theater in NY in 1967, when Michael was 9 years old. "I whipped him with a switch and a belt".

He had a well-documented complicated relationship with Michael Jackson, who claimed his father beat him in a 1988 tell-all book.

His fourth child, Jermaine, told the Daily Mail before Jackson's death that his father had attempted to prevent visits from his family, withholding information about his location and diagnosis. Together, they had 10 children.

In 1969, Jackson negotiated a deal for the quintet with Motown.

He was responsible for the rise of the Jackson 5 in the 1960s and 1970s, but his legacy was tainted by his alleged abusive parenting techniques, frequently beating his kids.

Janet Jackson paid tribute to her father on Friday while accepting the 2018 Impact Award at the Radio Disney Music Awards.
