New Joker Standalone Movie Starring Jared Leto Is Officially Happening

The psychopathic Joker, arguably the greatest nemesis of Batman both in its comic book universe and the movies, has so far been played by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto.

Aside from this Joker movie, it was previously announced that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was getting her own spin-off, which now appears to have been amalgamated with the Birds of Prey movie, set to be directed by Cathy Yan.

Jared Leto is set to star in and executive produce a new standalone film based on his Suicide Squad character, The Joker.

Similarly, it emerged last August that Warner Bros is also developing a Joker origin story without Leto.

Then, when the film came out, Leto's character had been more-or-less edited out of it.

While specific plot details remain unknown, reports suggest the studio is looking to expand the Suicide Squad world with a series of installments.

Joaquin Phoenix is already set to play the Joker (reportedly) in that above-mentioned 1980's set origin film, but as it will be under what Variety is terming an "origins" banner, it will be firmly set outside of the continuity of the mainline DCU on film. The studio's new direction means multiple actors can star as different versions of the same character without overlap. Leto's "Suicide Squad" incarnation was more cruel and self-assured, sporting slicked-back hair, face tattoos, and silver-capped fangs.

Jared Leto's version of the Joker in Suicide Squad was polarizing to say the least.

However, without a writer on board at this time, it is unclear when the flick would begin shooting, or whether it would be shot before the Suicide Squad sequel, which is expected to go into production sometime in 2019.
