Bourdain's mother, Gladys, 83, told The Times on Saturday that she was shocked by the news of her son's death.
"He is absolutely the last person in the world I would have ever dreamed would do something like this", she said.
"Tony had been in a dark mood these past couple of days... Money beyond his wildest dreams".
"This leads us to suspect that not much preparation and premeditation went into the act, and leads us more in the direction of an impulsive act", said Mr.de Rocquigny.
A self-acknowledged reformed addict of heroin and cocaine - "I would have robbed your medicine cabinet had I been invited to your house", he confessed in a 2013 Ask Me Anything session on Reddit - Bourdain was loved by those in the food world and beyond. He was somebody who was generous with his time.
It was one of his last meals.
Oliver wrote on Instagram: "I have to say I'm in total shock to hear that the fantastic @anthonybourdain has just died".
"He praised our bun cha dish and its fish-sauce broth, he loved Vietnamese food", she said.
But Bourdain also turned that critical lens on himself, acknowledging, in an interview with Slate, how he had contributed, or at least inured himself, to the hyper-masculine restaurant world-he refused to take his allyship for granted.
"All I can tell you is this: I got off of heroin in the 1980s". I've lost a dear friend today, and we mourn with the rest of the world.
Chef Wan said he broke into laughter when he saw Bourdain's description of him, as the American was initially very reserved.
Bourdain leaves behind a daughter and a girlfriend, Italian actress Asia Argento. "[It's] hard to imagine that he's not just off on some faraway journey, hard to imagine that he'll not return with new stories to tell, new foods to share", he added. Still, by many accounts, including Ripert's, Bourdain had not been himself. But you know, I also don't have that many regrets either. "And once you were drawn in, it was about the experience, it was about the connection, it was about his interaction - his interactions with people".
Still, the staff figured maybe Bourdain has just gone to a different restaurant for the night. "He taught us about food-but more importantly, about its ability to bring us together", Obama wrote on Twitter, captioning a photo of their dinner. The two men sat on plastic stools as they consumed grilled pork, rice noodles and fried spring rolls - all washed down with Hanoi beer.
And, with that, it's probably safe to say that Obama spoke for all of us.
