Edinson Cavani scored twice and Cristiano Ronaldo none, giving Uruguay a 2-1 victory over Portugal on Saturday at the World Cup.

But even in defeat, Ronaldo won hearts with a touching gesture towards Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, who had scored two spectacular goals to seal his team's berth in the last-eight.

If Barcelona forward Messi, who previously quit the Argentina team in 2016 before changing his mind, does not continue until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he will end his career without a major trophy for his country.

"It's not the time to talk about the future of the coach, the players, the squad", he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo has refused to comment on his future with Portugal after the European champions were dumped out of the World Cup.

"I think we have quality, individually and especially collectively, and we know that we're going to face a team that are very strong".

The World Cup lost its headline acts on Saturday as the game's two biggest stars, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, readied to leave Russian Federation after their teams were eliminated in the round of 16.

"I am convinced that he has a lot to give in football", said Santos, whose own future is in doubt after the team's elimination.

Portugal have lost each of their last nine World Cup games in which they've conceded the first goal. "In the second we were better, but we didn't make it", he explained.

"They have an excellent team, but we also have our weapons". But they stood firm after that and Cavani hit the victor with a curling strike into the far corner with his right foot. We cannot say that we made mistakes. we knew they were good in midfield, we tried to beat them back in the first half, we did it well.

While Suarez seemed to play down or avoid questions about Ronaldo, it's clear Uruguay must continue to have the tightest defence in the tournament to keep Ronaldo and others under control.

His best scoring opportunity came in the opening stanza when Portugal was awarded a free kick outside the area - and the internet was quick to notice something very peculiar shortly after the referee blew his whistle.

"No team can win with one player alone", Portugal coach Fernando Santos said. But we will try our best and look to impose our way of playing on them, using our strengths.

"The distinctive feature of the game was the dedication the players showed on the pitch, and that is the way that we see football", Tabarez said.
