In addition to being featured in "The Trans List", Maines has also appeared on "Royal Pains"; she'll be joined in the upcoming fourth season of "Supergirl" by fellow new characters Colonel Haley (April Parker Jones) and Manchester Black (David Ajala).
Maines praised the show for putting a trans actor in a role far apart from the kind that transgender stars usually get cast in. The season will find her coming into her own as the superhero Dreamer, following a similar path as Kara as she transitioned into Supergirl.
The Hollywood Reporter described Maines' character as a "soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others".
Nicole Maines says she wants viewers to realise that a trans character's plotline doesn't have to revolve around them being trans. Most notably, the CW series will debut TV's first transgender superhero, Dreamer.
Supergirl has recruited Nicole Maines to take on to portray the character.
She added, "We can be whoever we want, we can do whatever we want, we can be superheroes, because in many ways we are".
While she said the "men in dresses" portrayal of trans people on TV has been "damaging" for a long time, she said we're in the right moment to be having a meaningful effect on society in the portrayal of the trans community. "She's the superhero we need right now".
"I've been doing a lot of auditions lately because a lot of different shows have been really eager to tell the story of transgender people", Maines said on stage in San Diego.
"We have straight people playing gay people all the time and that's because there isn't a larger conversation around - there's not so much harmful rhetoric flying around that they are parading around, dressing up, pretending", she said. "Having trans people play trans roles show that we are valid in our identities and we exist".
CBR also pointed out that the Legion of Super-Heroes comic also introduced a transgender character in 1992 in the form of the scientist Shvaughn Erin, Element Lad's romantic interest, who took a drug to changer her sex from male to female.
The new season of Supergirl will air on October 14 on the CW.
