At least 71 people have overdosed from synthetic marijuana in CT with at least 52 of them at or near a CT city park, authorities said late Wednesday.
CBS News reported the victims, covering a range of ages, experienced "a multitude of signs and symptoms ranging from vomiting, hallucinating, high blood pressure, shallow breathing, semi-conscious and unconscious states", said Rick Fontana, director of the city's Office of Emergency Operations. While no deaths were reported, a local official says at least two of the overdose victims had "life-threatening symptoms".
The exact cause of the overdoses has not been confirmed, but officials suspect that synthetic cannabinoids, also called K2 or spice, are the culprit. The agency forecast that the final... Alston said many contend with mental health issues, making the drug abuse a medical issue in addition to a legal one.

Fire, police, and EMS personnel have said they will continue to staff a command post on the New Haven Green in case of further overdoses.
No one has died, but police said six people came close.
Most of the people who overdosed Wednesday in New Haven were lower-income or homeless, Hartman told WTNH.
Carol Cruz, a drug counselor at the South Central Rehabilitation Center, went to the green to see if she could help get some of the drug users into inpatient recovery - but she noted that it is hard to help K2 abusers because the drug is usually laced with other substances that may not be known.
"We heard from people on the green this morning that it potentially included PCP".
The fire department gave the affected individuals naloxone, a drug used to treat narcotic overdoses in emergencies, but those doses were reportedly ineffective. "Emergency responders rushed to one victim as officials were giving a news conference nearby late Wednesday morning".
Hawk said the people who tested positive may have taken other drugs laced with fentanyl in addition to the synthetic marijuana, which is plant material sprayed with drugs and chemicals.
More than a dozen people overdosed on synthetic marijuana at the same park July 4.
"Today's emergency is deeply troubling and illustrative of the very real and serious threat that illicit street drugs pose to health of individuals", the Democratic governor said in a statement.
