The White House flag at full-staff

The White House flag at full-staff

Under heavy pressure from veterans' groups, President Trump made a rare about-face yesterday, ordering American flags at all USA government buildings lowered to half-staff to honor the late Sen.

John McCain, adding that he had ordered the White House and all public flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the Vietnam War hero and two-time Republican presidential candidate. And he criticized the senator on Twitter, especially when their policy views differed. "But I think there ought to be a significant memorial for Senator McCain and his service", said Sen.

Later, at an evening dinner honoring evangelical leaders, he said "our hearts and prayers" are going to the family "and we very much appreciate everything that Senator McCain has done for our country".

McConnell reflected on the time he was able to spend with McCain this past May at his home in Sedona, Arizona, where he stayed while he underwent treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme.

The flags at the White House had been lowered a day earlier, but were back up on Monday in a break with tradition.

The flag atop the White House flew at half-staff over the weekend in recognition of McCain's death but was raised Monday and then lowered again amid criticism.

The statement went on to say that Vice President Mike Pence would speak at a ceremony at the Capitol on Friday, and chief of staff John Kelly, Defense Secretary James Mattis and National Security Adviser John Bolton would represent the administration at McCain's funeral service. McCain said in 2016 after the "Access Hollywood" tape emerged of Trump making crude remarks about grabbing women that he would not support him for president. "We owe him nothing less than the respect that he earned", the GOP senator said.

In a statement that began by highlighting their past conflicts, President Donald Trump expressed his respect Monday for Sen.

McCain's body will be laid to rest Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

"Anyone who tarnishes the reputation of John McCain deserves a whipping", Isakson said.

First, every school in America named after a Confederate historical figure should be renamed for McCain.

But Mr Trump told aides he wanted to post a brief tweet instead, and the statement praising Mr McCain's life was not released.

"Senator McCain was a shining example of what a modern leader should be".

Trump's attack on the search engine fit his strategy of keeping critics and supporters off-kilter by tossing out daily diversions from his most recent blunders, such as the disgraceful snub of American hero John McCain. But evidence of Trump's feud with McCain remained.

Following Mr McCain's death, admirers have recalled with fondness his insistence on fair and civil discourse - in contrast with the frequent incivility of Mr Trump and his habit of coining unflattering descriptions of political foes.

McCain, whom I had the good fortune to meet during an event at Congress, believed that major national goals can be achieved through cooperation.
