José Mourinho explains choice to make Paul Pogba captain vs. Leicester

Jose Mourinho

GETTY Mourinho lashed out at lies purported by the media

The midfielder returned on Monday and, although he has not featured in any pre-season friendlies, he was thrust straight back into the action four days later as the Premier League got under way once again at Old Trafford, United winning 2-1 on Friday.

Hello good evening and welcome to the start of another English football season and If you are a big fan of football, then this must be bliss for you.

It was the cherry on top of a complete performance from Shaw, who was given the Man of the Match award by Sky Sports commentator Jamie Carragher.

"I am very pleased for Luke Shaw".

The Frenchman, who had been linked with a possible transfer window move to Barcelona, said he remained hungry for more success.

And Pogba had the hosts in front from a penalty kick before three minutes, burying his attempt from the spot after a slow run up following a Daniel Amartey handball in the box.

"I don't remember in my career to be in so much in trouble to make my changes because I wanted to make five or six and I could only make three". Hopefully I can push on forward and get many more [goals] and help the team out more.

Mourinho cut a gloomy figure throughout pre-season, seemingly frustrated by the club's failure - or disinclination - to secure more of his summer transfer targets.

"I don't think Jose Mourinho's outbursts are him, I think it's at the Ed Woodward situation".

"I chose to take it, I was one of the names and in the next game, I can leave it to Alexis, it's not a problem". A lot of coaches forget that player development is part of the job description, but not Mou.

And speaking about his goal - his first in 134 games for Southampton and United since his first-team debut aged 16 in January 2012 - Shaw told United's official website: "Honestly I can't describe it, in front of the Stretford End, it's the best feeling I've had".

Despite no new defenders, Mourinho insisted he was happy with his squad, but accused critics of lying about any turmoil.

The French forward was left out of France's World Cup squad prior to their successful campaign in Russian Federation, a decision which came as no surprise after a disappointing 2017/18 season, and his pre-season has been blighted with speculation that manager Jose Mourinho is unhappy with him.
