When asked if he was happy for City to be favourites, he said: "Since nine years I live with that situation, it's no problem".

The Red Devils coach has cut a sullen figure throughout pre-season with the former Chelsea boss unable to hide his dissatisfaction with Brazil worldwide midfielder Fred being his sides only high profile signing.

"We won the triple and, since then, we are the favourites, so thank you - you are so kind!" Again, spending more than everyone else in the summers of 2015, 2016 and 2017 brought about another title in 2018.

"So I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to these first couple of matches - maybe three matches because after Spurs (and Burnley on August 27 and September 1 respectively) there is (a) national team (break) and a couple of weeks to recover people and prepare people better. If we play good and are consistent like last season, we have a chance to repeat".

"The list that I gave you before of the injured players is an important list and today after training I will speak with that group [of World Cup players] because everybody is different physically and mentally to see how they feel, how they are and to understand if they think how they can help or not help".

Though the former dressing room exuded history and reminiscence of the glory years under Sir Alex Ferguson, most United fans will be in no doubt that the home players' changing room needed a solid do-over.

Though United finished second behind their cross-city rivals in 17/18, they can at least claim the bragging rights to having the classiest dressing room in Manchester.

"Another point, we don't have more money to spend - that is the truth".

United have until 5 p.m on Thursday to add new players ahead of the start of the season.

"He said: "[Sergio] Romero, he had a surgery after his injury, [Antonio] Valencia, he was injured in pre-eason, Marcos Rojo, he was injured in the World Cup, [Diogo] Dalot had a surgery in Porto at the end of April and he is not yet ready.

"Raheem and Kevin arrived in a ideal way", added the City boss.
