The Rush: Tiger Woods gives us chills and thrills at PGA Championship

2018 U.S. Ryder Cup Team Captain Jim Furyk speaks during a news conference at Bellerive Country Club Monday Aug. 13 2018 in St. Louis

Brooks Koepka holds off Tiger Woods, Adam Scott to win PGA Championship

The PGA Championship was the final event for eight players to earn automatic spots.

Gary Woodland, who played with Woods in the final round, saw it up close.

Woods was as dynamic as he has been all year, shot 6-under 64 for the lowest final round of his career in the majors, had his lowest 72-hole score in the majors, captivated one of the largest and loudest galleries in golf and was runner-up to Brooks Koepka by two shots.

As for the Ryder Cup, Furyk ended up with the same eight players who started the week atop the USA standings.

"I played hard", Woods said. "The more hard the situation, the more pressure in a major championship, he has risen to that occasion now a number of times".

A video filmed by a spectator and posted on Reddit revealed that just before Woods drew back his club, the tinny sounds of a cellphone ringtone reverberated through the air, cutting into the silence and upsetting the gallery gathered around the tee box - and presumably Woods, too.

His last major was 10 years ago.

"It's been a pleasure to play in front of them, it really has", Woods said. "This was the first real Tiger effect I've experienced with that many people". The user uploaded a video that shows Woods having to deal with a cell phone going off just before his swing. The Italian became only the second player to win a major while paired with Woods in the final round.

When Shipnuck did not heed Koepka's warning, the golfer whispered to a USGA official before beginning his press conference, according to Shipnuck.

"I think other than me and my team, everybody was rooting for Tiger". "It kind of pushes you to step up your game".

"I mean, you have to because you know he's right there if you fall".

But Koepka, who heard the crowd cheering for Woods further down the course, was not to be denied. I called Diovisalvi to apologize and GOLF's top editor had a long chat with the management company that reps Koepka and Johnson, taking responsibility for the decision.

Nick Faldo marvelled, on CBS, that Koepka had put himself within 18-feet of the hole, in birdie position, on 41 occasions over his 72 holes.

Koepka also joins Woods in being one of just five players to win the US Open and PGA Championship in the same season.

"I miss competing", Koepka said.

There is little doubt that Koepka is now a major force on the circuit, and a potential world number one in the making.

Every one of those players has won at least one tournament this year except for Spieth, whose last win came at last year's British Open.

"It really hurt that I missed that [birdy shot at the 17th], just not to make it interesting up the last", Scott said.

Furyk, speaking to reporters Monday at Bellerive to introduce his qualified eight players, was hesitant to delve into who his picks might be.

He followed that up with an electrifying second place finish at the PGA Championship, showing everyone that it's no longer a question of if he will win another major (or four), but when.
