With smart speakers like Google Home, Amazon Echo, Apple HomePod slowly gaining popularity, it seems Google has taken an early lead in this segment.

Amazon also unveiled two new devices squarely aimed at the high-end audio crowd. Not so much. That's why the $60 AmazonBasics Microwave that works with Alexa is one of the most interesting products the company announced Thursday.

The Echo Dot: The new Echo Dot will cost $49.95. It also provides an intuitive touch screen with voice control.

The Echo Sub spotted by Pocket-Lint, adds a 100w bass bin to your existing Echo or Echo Plus.

What sets this apart from the Amazon Echo Show? Adding to that, the company also announced AmazonBasics Microwave and Echo Wall Clock today. The rear of the device looks like a large speaker and is covered in fabric. So how does it make a sound? It's got improved sound, too, along with Bluetooth and 3.5mm connectivity so that you can connect another speaker to it. Think of it as an Alexa-flavoured Chromecast Audio, then. Background road noise, the sound of the radio, and other people talking can get in the way of Alexa understanding, hence the need to squeeze eight microphones inside. Using the Alexa app on your phone, it can play music or give you turn by turn navigation. It will be available "soon".

The Echo Link is created to connect to a receiver or amplifier, with multiple digital and analog inputs and outputs for compatibility with your existing stereo equipment. And given that it's a Google Home device at heart, you'll have direct access to Google's growing smart home ecosystem and full access to the Google Assistant.

As you can with the other Smart Displays, you'll be able to use the Google Home Hub to view Google Photos and stream smart camera footage from your front door.

And that's your hardware lot.

At a special event in Seattle this afternoon Amazon revealed a range of new products running the Alexa digital assistant. This means that owners can ask Alexa what the temperature is in an individual room.

"Unsurprisingly, Amazon and Google models dominated the best-selling list of smart speakers in Q2 2018", David Watkins, director of Strategy Analytics' smart speaker service, said in a statement.
