Manuel Pellegrini was keen to bring on the former Arsenal forward as his side were creating a hatful of chances against a poor Everton back line and it looked as if they needed a clinical finisher on the pitch to take advantage of the chances that they were creating.
Andriy Yarmolenko put West Ham in command with two goals inside the first 31 minutes on his first Premier League start, with the Ukraine global taking time to settle in England prior to his double at Goodison Park. "I am anxious about finding the right team to play well and to win the game".
Television cameras captured the Spanish striker in what appeared to be a heated discussion with a member of the Hammers' staff shortly after Michail Antonio replaced the injured Marko Arnautovic.
"I think that we continued playing the same way we have done, but the best thing we did here, we went for the game from the first minute, we didn't wait for Everton to go.
I don't have to explain the decision, especially during the game, but Antonio was ready so Antonio was the change".
With West Ham on the counterattack, Pedro Obiang played a ball over the top of the Everton defence that Arnautovic ran under before setting up Yarmolenko for 10 yards for his first goal with the club.
"We believe in what we are doing and we are not going to change".
When quizzed om the substitution after the game, Pellegrini said: 'When Marko had a problem with his knee, I wanted to put on Lucas but Michail was ready. "The midfield was great and then it's our job to score goals".
"We worked hard this week because our results have been very bad".
And Hammers captain Mark Noble added: "The table looks a bit better now after our first three points".
"Even without a good performance, because we made some mistakes, but we had the chances to take the result".
