'Impeachment is hell': Manafort deal increases pressure on Trump

In a plea deal to avert a second trial on money laundering and illegal lobbying charges, Manafort agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and another count of obstruction of justice. He instead agreed to admit wrongdoing and cooperate fully with Mueller, turning over any documents that may be relevant to the special counsel's investigation and testifying in any proceedings where that might be necessary.

PAUL Manafort, US President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, will forfeit an estimated US$22 million worth of real estate in NY - including three Manhattan apartments, a Brooklyn town house and a home in the Hamptons - as part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors announced last Friday.

Under the terms of the deal, Manafort was allowed to plead guilty to just two counts, though the crimes he admitted largely overlap with the conduct alleged in an indictment previous year.

Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's feeble campaign chairman, will get to take care of his $1.25 million dwelling at the BallenIsles Country Membership in Palm Sea scramble Gardens, Florida.

Trump was quoted by CNN as saying, "Fake news and the Russian witch hunt". "For the first time we have somebody who was at the infamous Trump Tower meeting". Several participants told lawmakers under oath that the meeting veered into Russian adoptions and the Magnitsky Act, a U.S. sanctions law targeting human rights violators.

Friday's move gives special counsel Robert Mueller another successful conviction while allowing Manafort to avoid facing another costly public trial in Washington. Manafort emailed an intermediary asking that a message be sent to Deripaska, the Post reported. "I'm surprised that we are where we are, that Manafort is cooperating".

FARA, as it is known, was widely considered a joke until Manafort and his onetime protege, Rick Gates, were indicted a year ago.

Which leads to questions about a possible pardon for Manafort. It's unclear how Friday's deal might affect any Manafort pursuit of a pardon.

But clearly now there are complicating factors in Manafort's case. While Manafort was a member of the campaign, others also made contact with Russians, although it isn't clear what Manafort knew about any other contacts.

"It's so terrific for the investigation, and frankly for the American people, that we're moving forward and we're getting someone who may be knowledgable", Starr said. "The reason: The president did nothing wrong and Paul Manafort will tell the truth".

Ted Cruz (R-Texas) from "stealing the nomination" at the 2016 Republican National Convention. Stone has said - though he denies wrongdoing.

"What I don't understand is how you can say that the deal is limited".

What does he know about the Trump dossier?

Together what they know poses a grave threat of future criminal indictment against Trump on a range of issues.

Central to the government's case were depictions of an opulent lifestyle, including a $15,000 ostrich jacket, luxury suits and elaborate real estate that prosecutors say was funded through offshore wire transfers from shell companies in Cyprus and elsewhere. But he has also signaled that he's sympathetic to Manafort's case.

Manafort will be sentenced after he completes his cooperation with the special counsel, which may well affect the length of the sentence.

JOHNSON: This looks like a significant advance for the special counsel team - yet another guilty plea in an investigation that's not even a year and a half old.

Why was the GOP platform changed?

Whatever the impact of Manafort's testimony on possible future charges against Trump or his immediate family-the other two top aides at the Trump Tower meeting were Donald Trump, Jr. and son-in-law Jared Kushner-the documents filed with the federal court paint a picture of the utterly corrupt milieu in which both capitalist parties operate, the Democrats as much as the Republicans. While the platform was being drafted, Trump campaign officials stepped in to block a provision about arming Ukraine to fight Russian-backed militias.
