Mr Grassley didn't say late Tuesday if the hearing scheduled for Monday would go on without Ms Ford or whether the panel would vote on Judge Kavanaugh's nomination without hearing her testimony.

Anita Hill, whose allegation Clarence Thomas sexually harassed her prompted a similar hearing in 1991, told ABC on Wednesday that the Judiciary Committee could be holding "just a sham proceeding" next week without the FBI investigation Ford wants.

"Were planning on a hearing Monday".

"This just came out 48 hours ago", she told CNN's Anderson Cooper, referring to her client's account in The Washington Post.

But Trump said he supported the additional Judiciary Committee hearing, saying "there shouldn't even be a little doubt", about Kavanaugh's nomination. They also want more witnesses besides Kavanaugh and Ford, hoping to avoid what they said would turn into merely a "he-said-she-said" moment.

"Immediately after learning of Dr. Ford's identity from news reports Sunday, committee staff started working to gather facts related to her claims".

"If the chairman called the Federal Bureau of Investigation and said, 'we have this question about a nominee. Many of us are survivors ourselves". "The invitation for Monday (Sept. 24) still stands".

Cristina Miranda King, who said she attended the same school as Ford, wrote on Twitter that the alleged incident "was spoken about for days afterwards in school" at the time.

This is in keeping with what Carlson said - that it's on the White House to request the FBI investigation in this case.

Almost 600 women who attended the school have written a letter of support for Ford, published on Tuesday. Dianne Feinstein on September 12 to the White House counsel's office in accordance with guidelines for conducting background checks.

But the Department of Justice, referring back to a statement released Monday, says the Federal Bureau of Investigation fulfilled its role by forwarding a letter to the White House Counsel's Office.

Manafort pleaded guilty last week to criminal charges stemming from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry into Russian interference in the USA 2016 presidential election and possible co-ordination between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

Ford, a California psychology professor, told The Washington Post Kavanaugh groped her at a suburban Washington house party when she was 15 and he was 17.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of MA posted a video on her Twitter feed of a speech Kavanaugh gave in 2015 in which he recalls his life with three friends at Georgetown Preparatory School.

"This is a completely false allegation".

He also defended longtime pal Kavanaugh, saying: 'I never saw Brett act in the manner Dr. Ford described'. She says she escaped when Judge jumped on the bed. Joe Biden, head of the Judiciary Committee, Hill first told the committee of the allegations on this day, as reported in the Times.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Ford could testify privately or appear publicly before national television cameras.

"It's really a way of dismissing her and suggesting that her memory isn't clear", Guerry said. "It's the men in this country", Hirono said at a news conference Tuesday.

Collins added Wednesday that she'd received a "quite positive" response from Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) regarding that proposal.

Democrats have pushed back on the hearing. "We'll have to make a decision".

"It's impossible to take this process seriously", Feinstein said. "A proper investigation must be completed, witnesses interviewed, evidence reviewed and all sides spoken to". Hill said Thomas frequently asked her out on dates and described his sexual interests to her.

"As a result of these kind of threats, her family was forced to relocate out of their home. We're better than this".

"[An FBI investigation] should be the first step in addressing the allegations", the lawyers wrote in a letter to the Judiciary Committee.
