Sep 6, 2018; Newtown Square, PA, USA; Rory McIlroy hits his tee shot on the second hole during the first round of the BMW Championship golf tournament at Aronimink GC. That included Tiger Woods, who missed only two greens in regulation, kept a clean card, shot 66 and let a good round get away. The four-time Major victor made six straight birdies from his ninth hole to go nine under and raise the possibility of shooting 59. Tommy Fleetwood is one shot behind Woods after hitting eight birdies for an eight-under-par round of 62 to charge up the leaderboard.

Hideki Matsuyama shot a 6-under 64 to land three shots off the pace in a four-way tie for third. That made for an early finish, and overnight rain made for another low-scoring day at Aronimink Golf Club.

Justin Rose could sense the sky getting a little darker, the wind a little cooler and more brisk.

The BMW Championship is the second last event of the $US67 million ($A93 million) play-offs series and decides the top 30 on the FedExCup standings who advance to the Tour Championship finale.

Two late bogeys stopped McIlroy from grabbing the outright lead.

Nothing less than victory at the BMW Championship this week will give Xander Schauffele a chance of forcing his way onto the American team for this month's Ryder Cup, the former frontrunner for a captain's pick has said. Woods was understandably frustrated after opening the tournament with a 62 on Thursday and not being able to add to it.

Schauffele also needs a good week to get to East Lake, though he would like to extend his season an additional week in France at the Ryder Cup.

"Absolutely I was trying to make the putt on 18 to make sure I was ahead of the field".

His only bogey came at the par-three eighth, where he misjudged his tee shot and sent an eight-iron over the back into punishing rough. "But they didn't go in today". "I wasn't doing much". He tied sixth in the U.S. Open and tied second in The Open Championship.

"I made a few putts today and also from right out of the gate with birdies at 10 and 12 and 13 so that was a nice way to get things rolling", said Woods, who started on the back nine.
