As part of the partnership announced Wednesday, Golden Boy Promotions will put on up to 10 high-caliber fight nights per year that will stream live on DAZN beginning in early 2019. The company's other top fighters include Venezuela's Jorge Linares, Rey Vargas of Mexico and Canada's David Lemieux.
Canelo was most recently aligned with USA broadcaster HBO but the network announced it would move away from live boxing coverage at the end of 2018.
A key part of the deal for boxing fans is that it removes the sport's biggest PPV star in the USA from the platform altogether as Alvarez's fights can now be accessed on DAZN, along with various other boxing and mixed martial arts events, for the monthly price of $9.99.
DAZN - owned by the Perform Group - launched in Austria, Germany, Japan and Switzerland in August 2016 and moved into the United States market this year.
"We are thrilled to be exclusive partners with Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya", said John Skipper, DAZN Group Executive Chairman. "We are committed to making this sport as accessible as possible and at an affordable price for the all fans".
"I've always liked a challenge, and this is yet another challenger in my career", Alvarez said. My dream has been to make boxing a sport for all. "By bringing Canelo's fights to DAZN, we will turn his pay-per-view success into a growth engine for subscribers - a truly transformational moment for our business and the entire industry".
Under the deal's terms, Alvarez, who owns a 50-1-2 record as a professional boxer, will fight on DAZN's streaming platform, which recently launched in the U.S. The platform charges a $9.99 monthly fee for access to combat sports events around the world, including Bellator MMA. DAZN made a big splash over the summer by signing promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, with a stable including unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, to an eight-year, $1 billion deal.
Who's to say DAZN can't have Matchroom / Hearn, De La Hoya / Golden Boy and Al Haymon (managed fighters) fights all on their platform in time?
Promoter De La Hoya told ESPN: "Canelo is the highest-paid athlete in the world".
This appears to be a totally separate deal according to Rafael's report however, where Golden Boy look to be planning to make DAZN their new home for boxing.
