One of the biggest names to hit the trade rumors was Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas and he was rumored to be headed to either the New England Patriots or Houston Texans. The Broncos are acquiring the Texans' 2019 fourth- and seventh-round draft picks as part of the deal, while Houston gets back the Broncos' 2019 seventh-round selection.
With the trade, the Broncos created up to $18 million in extra 2019 salary cap space.
"Demaryius had an incredible run here and we can't thank him enough for everything he's meant to the Broncos", GM John Elway said in a release from the team. The Texans have added not only a Super Bowl champion wide receiver, but a player who will force teams to choose split time in concentrating on Thomas or a Top 5 National Football League wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
"We were not hell bent on trading Demaryius, " Elway said. The team also could restructure Thomas' deal in the offseason. Houston's interest in Thomas no doubt picked up with both their recent surge to the top of the AFC South standings, and the loss of starting wide receiver Will Fuller for the year.
The Texans have a need at wide receiver after Will Fuller was lost for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee, suffered during the team's win over the Dolphins on Thursday night. Denver has missed the playoffs the last two seasons, and it looks like they will again this year, too.
Thomas, 30, has been to the Pro Bowl four times since entering the league in 2010, a career in which he's caught 665 passes for more than 9,000 yards and 60 touchdowns.
