Eric Reid takes a knee during national anthem in first game as Carolina Panthers player

Reid, who was signed as a free agent by the Panthers on September 27, continued his tradition of kneeling during the anthem before Sunday's game.

". He was the 1ST person 2 kneel alongside me". Three Miami Dolphins have protested and there have been scattered incidents, but nothing like the mass player protests of last season. He also got some help via a monster pancake-block on a Giants defensive lineman by none other than quarterback Cam Newton. It's also the second-longest kick in National Football League history, putting Gano in a five-way tie behind Matt Prater, who hit a 64-yarder for the Broncos in the thin Denver air in 2013.

"He is everything that is advertised, and we need him to be him", said Newton.

Beckham Jr. may have accidentally contributed to the Panthers' special teams touchdown, but he made some big plays at receiver on Sunday against cornerback James Bradberry.

"I'm proud of everything we showed today", said Beckham.

Beckham had one big mistake in the first half that cost his team. The last member of the Panthers to protest was defensive end Julius Peppers, who stayed in the locker room prior to the anthem past year when players around the league protested. "He's really smart with those kinds of things and they do a nice job putting him in some of those kinds of situations".

A few plays later, the Panthers scored a touchdown, bringing their lead to 27-16 with just 11:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers got another weapon back on the field and he made an immediate impact.

The Giants are hoping the 6-foot-6 290-pound Mauro will improve their fortunes in defending the zone reads. That will be key to shutting down this potent Carolina offense.

Reid was the first player to kneel alongside Colin Kaepernick during the anthem in protest of social injustice.

San Francisco 49ers free safety Eric Reid (35) reacts after beating the Chicago Bears 26-20 in overtime at Soldier Field.

Christian McCaffrey picked up the first down (barely), but the Panthers had to waste precious clock.
