Cristiano Ronaldo has branded rape claims against him as "fake news", saying that people "want to promote themselves" by using his name.

Legal representatives of the former Manchester United star are to take legal action against Der Spiegel over "blatantly illegal" allegations by an American woman that she was raped nine years ago by the star.

Most recently, the woman Kathryn Mayorga, shed her ranonymity in order to detail the alleged incident that took place at a Las Vegas hotel in '09 in a new article with the publication.

A Las Vegas woman has publicly come forward with rape allegations against soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo has described the rape allegations levelled against him as "fake news".

Even her medical reports claim that the patient's rectum was penetrated and that ejaculation had happened in the assailant's hand.

He met Ms Mayorga at Rain nightclub in the Palms Hotel and Casino, and was photographed speaking to her before inviting the Las Vegas native and some of her friends to a party in his suite at the same hotel.

The German magazine had previously reported on the accusation in April 2017, with Gestifute calling that report "journalistic fiction." She says she struggled to maintain relationships or hold down a job. The same outlet first reported on Kathryn's lawsuit on September 28, and a rep for Cristiano called the reporting "journalistic fiction" and "blatantly illegal", adding, "It violates the personal rights of our client Cristiano Ronaldo in an exceptionally serious way. The documents claim Ronaldo left the bedroom after the assault, 'stating he was sorry, he was usually a gentleman".

"We have been instructed to immediately assert all existing claims under press law against [Der Spiegel], in particular compensation for moral damages in an amount corresponding to the gravity of the infringement, which is probably one of the most serious violations of personal rights in recent years". "Nobody sued us in connection with earlier Ronaldo reports", he said in an email.

Spiegel reported that Ms Mayorga's lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall, has filed a civil complaint to declare the non-disclosure agreement void. "I've had like these serious breakdowns", she told the magazine.

Those statements mirrored thoughts she once had about Ronaldo, she told the magazine.
