In the two other times James has debuted with a new team, it took a while for him and his new teammates to jell.

Minutes after National Basketball Association superstar LeBron James walked off the court Thursday night following his highly anticipated debut in purple and gold, the four-time MVP shared the key ingredient necessary to resuscitate the legendary but languishing Los Angeles Lakers: Oatmeal. "It takes a while to get to where you can close your eyes and know exactly where your guys are".

Ball came off the bench in the only preseason game the Lakers were at full strength which coincided with his return to the court from off-season knee surgery.

"I don't think you could ever have LeBron James and not try to win now", he said of the former Cleveland Cavalier and Miami Heat forward, who has appeared in eight successive NBA Finals.

The Lakers kick off their 2018-2019 campaign on Thursday with a trip to Portland to battle the Trail Blazers before hosting Houston on Saturday.

The Lakers giving up 128 points to the Blazers is one thing, but the amount of open looks and second chances as they gave up 14 offensive rebounds is another matter.

But it was not enough to prevent the Lakers losing to Portland for the 16th successive meeting as Damian Lillard led the way for the hosts with 28 points.

"It (is) going to take patience from our team, from all of us", James said.

Either way, it's just one game. "So, it's still early". "We talked about those are things we get better at". You're going to go through some adversity.
