Google Pixel 3 and Pixel Slate to new Chromecast: Here’s what to expect from the Google event tonight

Google's gadget show: Look for new phones, 'smart' home devices, more

While the Pixel 3 is supposed to have the same 18:9 aspect ratio display as the Pixel 2 but the "XL" variant is expected to feature a wide notch display.

The rest of the Pixel Slate is rather featureless. There are also stereo front-facing speakers and an extra front-facing camera on both devices. No matter, we have all the official details and availability info now.

The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL are available for pre-order now from Verizon, Project Fi, and the Google Store unlocked. Both phones have a single 12.2MP rear camera with 1.4um pixels, optical and electronic image stabilization, and an f/1.8 aperture. People are still buying Amazon's Kindle Fires, but mainly because they are so attractively priced. The Pixel Stand will also trigger a "more thoughtful alarm clock" which will change colours to slowly wake you as you near the alarm time. This time around, we may see an upgraded chip on the new Pixel 3 smartphones, along with additional AI features to make the cameras even more impressive. This is the first tablet we've seen from the company since the Pixel C.

The Pixel Slate will be available latest this year from retailers in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom starting at $599. Since then, Google has invested more heavily in its "Made by Google" device lineup, which includes everything from virtual reality headsets to video and audio streaming devices.

The new generation Pixel smartphone supports wireless charging but you would need to purchase a separately sold wireless charger.

Specifications wise, it's exactly as we expected given the numerous leaks we've had surface over the previous months.

Google Lens has been integrated into the Pixel 3's camera, meaning contextual information can instantly provided to owners of the new Android flagship. When a call comes in, three buttons come up - answer, reject, or screen call. The base model with 4GB of RAM and a Celeron processor isn't going to blow anyone away, but you can spec up this exact device to a Core i7 and 16GB of RAM where it could compete with the best Chromebooks available today.

One thing Google has over all of its Android partners is control over the operating system. It features front-facing and rear-facing camera with Portrait mode and advanced camera technology, a fingerprint scanner, and a detachable keyboard cover with a kickstand.

Earlier this year at CES, Google debuted its smart display platform - hardware device with visual elements such as cards, carousels, native YouTube, Google Maps, Google Photos app and Duo video conferencing. The interface of course enables the always on Google Assistant, turning your charging display into a Home Hub of sorts. There's support for some third-party apps like Spotify but Google doesn't have the same vast range of functions created for Amazon's all-conquering Alexa. This is where the new innovations have concentrated, as Google and its ilk focus on features and possibilities that can be generated from its artificial intelligence, machine learning, and sheer processing power.
