But on Sunday, Swift told her 112 million Instagram followers that she was backing and would vote for two Democrats running in Tennessee in the USA congressional midterm elections on November 6.

For comparison's sake, 190,178 new voters were registered via Vote.org nationwide during September and 56,669 in August.

Taylor Swift's politically-charged post sparks a surge of voter registrations. Specifically for the state of Tennessee, where Taylor will be voting, they received 5,183 registrations in state this month with 2,144 of those registrations coming after Taylor's Instagram statement. Guthrie said the site had also seen a big uptick in the number of visitors since Swift's post, with 155,940 unique visitors in the 24 hours following.

Kirk says that the "proper" thing to do would have been to have some "neutrality" in her post, and simply encourage people to register to vote. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape.

Donald Trump couldn't resist from clapping back at Taylor Swift after the popstar broke her silence on her political views for the first time to back two Democratic politicians in the upcoming mid-term elections, while criticising a Republican candidate. "It's rather evident and clear-I don't want to accuse her of this", he says before lobbing insulting accusations, "but I don't think she was the only one to write that post on Instagram". She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples.

Bredesen is thankful for Swift's support, writing in a tweet over the weekend, "Thank you for the kind words, [Taylor Swift]". But they also enraged many conservatives, especially those in the country music community where Swift got her start as a teenager and went on to win 10 Grammys. These are not MY Tennessee values ... She also advised fans to vote for incumbent Democratic Congressman Jim Cooper.

Swift, 28, has notably stayed out of the USA political fray in contrast to her more vocal peers, like Democratic supporters Katy Perry and Beyoncé, and Republican backer Kid Rock. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. It seems that fans and followers from the musician's home state of Tennesse were among the most impacted by Taylor's words. "Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values", she wrote.
