Amazon rolls out free shipping promotion for the holidays

Amazon will offer free shipping on holiday purchases

National Amazon will offer free shipping on holiday purchases The move will make hundreds of millions of items eligible for free shipping

As part of the Black Friday event, Amazon will offer "Deals of the Day" throughout that will see dramatic price cuts on "must-have electronics, toys and fashion to sports, beauty, home items and more".

It may be because Amazon felt the need to compete with big box stores who are also offered free shipping promotions.

Amazon's free-shipping promotion begins today, and while the company doesn't provide a firm end date, it sure sounds like this will be running all the way through the holiday season, possibly right up until the end of the year. A spokeswoman said it is the first time Amazon has dropped its minimum order size to qualify for free standard shipping - which generally takes between five and eight days - to zero.

Amazon is looking to boost holiday sales and add new prime members.

A few weeks ago, Target announced that it's going to offer customers free 2-day shipping during the holiday season, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with absolutely no requirements. Also mentioned was the previous free-delivery threshold on orders larger than $25.

Amazon's shipping costs have grown rapidly in recent quarters.

The National Retail Foundation forecasts holiday retail sales will climb by up to 4.8% compared to a year ago. So long as shipping partners are not too backed up, that could mean right up to December 24 given that Amazon can do same-day delivery in select areas.

Amazon has something special for Prime users as well, as it says that same-day delivery is now available to "tens of millions" of subscribers on more than three million items.

Black Friday, which falls on Friday 23rd November, has become a highly-anticipated date in the United Kingdom shopping calendar and marks the start of the Christmas shopping season for some people.
