Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr.is once again a world champion after dethroning Northern Ireland's Ryan Burnett in their World Boxing Super Series Quarterfinal bout to become the new WBA (Super) Bantamweight World Champion, Saturday in Glasgow, Scotland.
It is the first time Donaire has held a bantamweight world title since retaining the unified WBO and WBC titles against Omar Narvaez in late 2011.
Burnett, for his part, warned Donaire not to look past him as he will do everything to keep the world championship and be the one to contest for other bantamweight world titles.
The Belfast fighter had already claimed the British title and WBO European title before winning the IBF World title against Lee Haskins.
Mr. Donaire, with the win, also advanced to the semifinals of the World Boxing Super Series bantamweight tournament where he is set to face World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Zolani Tete.
"Next, I would like to send prayers of healing to Ryan Burnett and thank him for sharing the ring with me". "He has a wee bit of everything and I am sure he will beat Donaire and continue on in the competition".
In a handsome show of sportsmanship, Donaire quickly rushed to Burnett's corner and shared his condolences with Burnett and his corner.
"Burnett is a fantastic boxer and he should be getting more recognition for what he has achieved in the sport. He would deserve that because he has done very well".
Donaire was on the front foot in the third, but Burnett continued to come forward in a contest which was bubbling up nicely until being so cruelly cut short.
Burnett suffered his first defeat and now carried a 19-1 win-loss record with nine knockouts.
