"No one better harmonized the joy of life and the duty of life". As a candidate, Trump belittled Bush's son Jeb, a Republican rival for the presidency, and has long criticised the Iraq War launched by George W. Bush.

"Resolute through war, President Bush was magnanimous in peace", Mr. Trump said.

The United State's Postal Service is suspending regular mail deliveries that day to honor President George H.W. Bush.

Even before sunrise Tuesday, members of the public lined up to pay their respects as an honor guard stood watch beside Bush's casket in the cavernous Rotunda, open until Wednesday's funeral. "And he exemplified what it truly means to be a leader", said Carper.

Bush will lie in state all day.

Bush will be buried Friday at Texas A&M University, where the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is located.

Bush's body was flown to Washington, D.C., on Monday. The late President Bush called Trump a "blowhard". "For now, Martha and I send our sincerest condolences to the Bush family and pray that President George H.W. Bush may rest in peace", said Carper.

Trump has proclaimed Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018, as a National Day of Mourning in remembrance of former President George H.W. Bush.

And in June, when fellow former president Bill Clinton paid Bush a visit, he showed off some blue socks that had the Arkansas Democrat's face stitched into them.

Vice President Mike Pence and Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell also spoke. Addressing the Bush family and other guests in the Rotunda, he compared himself to the late president, saying they both served outsider presidents who came to Washington to cut taxes, rebuild the military and "shake things up".

Nasdaq also observed a moment of silence, displayed a message honoring Bush on the Nasdaq Tower in Times Square and announced a Wednesday closure.

"I'm just here to pay my respects", said Jane Hernandez, a retired physician. Dole also served in the war.
