Nuggets forward Paul Millsap suffered broken toe against Hornets

John Collins finished with a career-high 30-point haul and a double-double to lift the Atlanta Hawks over the Denver Nuggets. Atlanta snapped a four-game losing streak. But the repercussions of Denver's current five-game road trip, which has seen the Nuggets travel from Portland to Toronto, Orlando and Charlotte, began to set in late in the fourth.

Millsap left the game in the third quarter after he landed awkwardly contesting a shot from Hornets forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

All-star point guard, Kamba Walker, scored a game-high 21 points, adding eight assists and six rebounds.

"To me, that was one of his better floor games", coach Lloyd Pierce said.

Denver made just 8 of 35 3-pointers (22.9 percent) in the defeat.

The Denver Nuggets fear that Paul Millsap suffered a broken toe during Friday's loss at Charlotte.

Hawks: Backup PG Jeremy Lin was sidelined by a lower back strain. The other problem for Atlanta is Paul Millsap, who spent four productive seasons with the Hawks.

In his 13th season, the 6-foot-8, 246-pound Millsap is averaging 13.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

For the Hawks, with Taurean Prince out for a few weeks, the return of Kent Bazemore to the starting lineup means that the Trae Young/Kevin Huerter backcourt (or Ice Trae/Red Pepper if you prefer) will have to be broken up for the time being.

"No excuses", Denver coach Michael Malone said. "To control the boards against a team like this really helped us get out and run".

The Atlanta Hawks have had a rough go of it here recently, as they are overmatched in terms of talent and experience on most nights.

The Nuggets, who'd won also won five in a row on the road prior to the matchup at Spectrum Center, came into the game in sole possession of first-place in the Western Conference standings. Good teams find a way to close it out in the fourth, and if the Hornets want to take a jump to the next level, they need more of that energy they had in the final minutes against Denver. High-scoring guards Will Barton (right hip/core) and Gary Harris (right hip) also were out.
