WH Chief of Staff John Kelly could be replaced before the holidays

"He's a great guy", Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for Philadelphia where he will attend the annual football game between the Army and Navy military academies.

A source explained that the men 'know that they are 17 months into what has been a very tumultuous relationship, ' adding: 'It is no longer seen as sustainable by either party'. A flurry of media reports in April claimed that Kelly had grown increasingly frustrated with the president.

Some reports said that the retired Marine Corps general's relationship with Mr Trump had deteriorated.

Nikki Haley - She said on October 9 that she would step down at the end of the year as US ambassador to the United Nations.

Though highly praised by Trump upon his appointment in July 2017 and seen as something as a check on Trump's unruly behavior, Kelly has seen his power fade among these ongoing clashes including several with Trump himself.

Kelly had planned to announce his departure to senior staff members Monday, but Trump pre-empted him on the South Lawn on Saturday afternoon.

Sources close to the White House have told The Wall Street Journal and other United States media outlets that Nick Ayers, Vice President Mike Pence's top aide, will be Kelly's likely replacement. But Mr. Trump and Ayers may come to an agreement over the weekend.

Stephen Bannon - Trump's chief strategist was sacked by Trump in mid-August after clashing with White House moderates. This was after White House lawyers initially objected to Mueller's request to do the interview earlier in the summer.

Kelly has been on the verge of resigning or being fired before, only to bounce back every time. Lights are off in Kelly's office this morning, per a senior admin official.

In his year-plus time as chief, Kelly has fought with just about everyone except for the president.

Here are some senior figures who have been fired or quit the administration since Trump took office on January 20, 2017. But the president says an announcement about a replacement will be coming in the next day or two.

"I'll be announcing that over the next day or two but John will be leaving at the end of the year".

Kelly is the latest high-ranking White House official known to have given information for Mueller's probe. Bolton had criticized Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen during a discussion about the border, and Kelly stormed out of the West Wing after their profanity-laced argument. He has many detractors within the White House, where some people consider him brash and presumptuous. Kelly's shifting accounts caused his credibility inside the West Wing to plummet, and it never truly recovered, according to officials. "He is departing what is often a thankless job, but John Kelly has my eternal gratitude".
