Chelsea boss Sarri: Higuain? Don't ask me - it's boring!

Neil Humphreys Higuain has fame not form

Gonzalo Higuain scored a record-equalling 36 goals for Napoli in the 2015/16 Serie A season but the figures have steadily declined since

Maurizio Sarri was left furious with his Chelsea players after they were comfortably beaten by Arsenal in this evening's high profile game at the Emirates.

The Gunners were as effective as Chelsea were blunt and they were good value for a win that came courtesy of goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny, and which was achieved through the implementation of an intense pressing game from minute one. "From a technical POV the teams are on the same level, but they were more determined than us".

The Chelsea head coach switched to his native Italian for his post-match press conference after saying that he wanted to "send a very clear message" to his players. "This defeat was due to our mentality, our mental approach". I want to be clear, because I can not help you (the media).

This was in spite of the fact that they had 44 touches in the Arsenal area; only against Newcastle in August have they managed more in a Premier League game this season. We spoke a great deal about that loss and our approach at the time, and I spoke to the players, and I thought we had overcome this issue. "It seems that as a group of players they are not particularly aggressive from a mental point of view and they don't have the kind of ferocity and that's to do with their characteristics". My time was over in Arsenal and I was really pleased to sign in a big club like Chelsea.

"I'd prefer to come in to the press room, be in the changing room and speak to the players and speak to you now, to talk about the tactics, about why we lost from a tactical point of view, but the fact of the matter is it appears this group of players are extremely hard to motivate".

Sources told ESPN FC on Wednesday that Chelsea are close to signing Higuain from Juventus on an initial six-month loan deal with an option to buy after Sarri was present in a meeting between Granovskaia and Nicolas Higuain - the striker's brother and agent - in London.

N'Golo Kante has been deployed on the right side of midfield, in a more attacking role than the one to which he is accustomed, in order to accommodate Jorginho, who followed Sarri from Napoli to Stamford Bridge last July. "If any player was afraid of that, then they would not be playing at this level in the first place". But I think it's very important to improve from the starting condition of this year. We have to talk openly about what's happening.

"I settled really well - it's like I was part of this Chelsea team for a long time".

"Jorginho has played with me for four seasons".

But despite his fierce public criticism of his players, Sarri insisted he has not wavered in his determination to turn the situation around.

"This is not a team that is going to be well known for its battling qualities, but we need to become a team that is capable of adapting, possibly suffering for 10 or 15 minutes, and then playing our own football".

"You can find yourself in difficulties from time to time, but we need to react to those difficulties a lot better than we did today. Today we didn't play our own football".

The contrasting displays of the two holding midfielders, Lucas Torreira and Jorginho, were emblematic of their teams on the night.

"This is the sort of thing that we don't want to happen. There's an opportunity to put them nine points behind us, but in a personal way it's going to be a special moment".

Asked in the mixed zone about Chelsea's struggles to create chances against Arsenal, centre-back David Luiz highlighted the need for the entire team to improve, not only the players up front. So we have the possibility to improve on that.
