Kevin Hart seemed like a sure thing - until he wasn't, after past homophobic tweets resurfaced and he didn't apologize. I had to address those tweets in 2012 in a very, very heavy junket where I was asked questions about homophobia based on those tweets, and I had to address it and apologize and say I understand what those words do and how they hurt.
The Night School star initially refused to say sorry for past jokes made on his Twitter account because he had done so years ago, and chose to step down from his role hosting the Academy Awards in February - but it is said that he could be brought back for the role.
The Ellen Show host, one of the first openly lesbian Hollywood stars, announced her support for Hart after a candid interview on her talk show in which he apologized again for the remarks. I have made mistakes and I have embraced them all because I am a better man today because of it.
Kevin Hart, who had stepped down as the host of the 91st Academy Awards 48 hours after the announcement was made in the wake of a controversy about reported homophobic comments he made in the past, is "evaluating his decision" after speaking to Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show, reports Variety.
In the clips, Hart said he recognized that his comments on Twitter were unsafe and said he had apologized and grown in the 10 years since he made them. Hart reiterated that he had always wanted to host, that he would be the fourth black person in history to get the job. "It wasn't a coincidence that the day after I received the job, tweets just somehow manifested from 2008", Hart said. But DeGeneres countered that if he doesn't host, "they're gonna win". "That's an attack, that's a malicious attack on my character, that's an attack to end me, that's not an attack to just stop the Oscars". "'Kevin we want you to host because we want you to lighten the mood up and bring you and your essence to this night'". I thought it was an awesome thing. "And I'm glad that it was as authentic and real as I could have hoped that it would be", he said. If you don't believe that people change, grow, evolve as they get older, I don't know what to tell you.
"I called them", she said. And two, maybe Ellen will give Hart a new way of looking at the backlash. You have grown, you have apologized...
"Either my apology is accepted or it isn't", he said. "Either I can move forward, or I can't".
"Where I was at that point - an immature comic".
As of now the spot for Oscars 2019 host is vacant as the Academy hasn't been able to hire someone for the job.
She noted that, as a lesbian, she had discussed his past homophobic material before the taped interview and said that she felt the Hart of those jokes had matured beyond them.
