U.S. News & World Report rolled out its list of the best diets of 2019, and the Mediterranean diet took the top spot.

Foods including whole-grain pita bread, fresh fruit, salads, nuts, beans, olive oil, and salmon are staples of 2019's top diet and promote a variety of health benefits. It was also named best diabetes diet, best diet for healthy eating, best plant-based diet, best heart-healthy diet, and easiest diet to follow.

The report also listed diets that are best for fast weight loss.

U.S. News & World Report, in collaboration with a panel of health experts, evaluated and ranked 41 diets.

The very high protein, rule-heavy Dukan diet.

The DASH diet was second - that's Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.

The concept of the Mediterranean diet comes from the countries that border the Mediterranean sea, where people historically ate mainly produce, nuts, and healthy fats. Even those who didn't stick to the diet perfectly but followed it "moderately well" reduced their risk of Alzheimer's by about a third, the researchers found. "Those things may seem mundane because they're so basic and yet we see year over year that those are the diets that work and have staying power and are the healthiest for us".

The DASH diet, made up of low-sodium and healthful foods, was originally started by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) as a diet to help reduce blood pressure. In fact, the diet is safe for most people, including children and older people.

"On these types of diets, you often don't learn how to manage holidays, stressful days or special occasions".

Red meat and sugary foods are very limited, but adding red wine is alright in moderation.

The plan focuses on fruit, vegetables, whole grain, lean protein and low-fat dairy and eliminates foods high in fat and sugar-sweetened drinks and candies, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, ranked five a year ago, is a hybrid of the top-rated DASH and Mediterranean diets.

If you're gearing up to eat healthier this year, consider including whole grains, seafood, and healthy fats in your diet.

The Weight Watchers diet tied for fourth place with the MIND diet.
