Matt Pike from the fairly underground metal band High On Fire, who likely didn't ever expect to be ascending to the stage during the Grammys, accepted an award for best metal performance behind Electric Messiah. The British star is up for best new artist later in the show.

Janelle Monae's Dirty Computer, country singer Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour, Carlile's By The Way, I Forgive You, newcomer H.E.R's self-titled H.E.R., and the Black Panther soundtrack round out contenders for album of the year.

Lady Gaga scooped up five nominations including for both Record and Song of the Year for her heart-pounding hit "Shallow", which she performed in the film "A Star Is Born" with co-star Bradley Cooper. The performance definitely feels like a statement, even though the set (which, in a pre-show interview with Ryan Seacrest, Cabello said was supposed to evoke a family home - her grandmother's, I think) felt a little Broadway.

But this year, Monae is looking forward to the show, where women are now leading in nominations for big categories like album of the year and best new artist. So give Drake credit for having the cachet to pull off the biggest surprise of the Grammys Sunday night just by actually appearing to pick up his trophy for best rap song for "God's Plan".

Childish Gambino won the coveted prize for best music video for his politically provocative "This Is America".

"It was when my creativity & self-expression was stifled by you that i decided not to attend".

Grande's Grammy comes after six career nominations and she tweeted on Sunday: "i know i'm not there tonight (trust, i tried and still truly wished it had worked out tbh) and i know i said i try not to put too much weight into these things. but (.) this is wild and attractive. thank you so much". "I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more". Kendrick Lamar leads with eight nominations, followed by Drake with seven and Brandi Carlile with six. A representative for the Grammys didn't return an email seeking clarification about the tribute.

When asked about the lack of women in the top categories at the 2018 Grammys, Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow said women need to "step up". Taylor Swift, who was snubbed and one scored one nomination, also won't be at the show.

The show will be hosted this year by 15-time Grammy victor Alicia Keys. There will be awkward moments, but a planned tribute to Aretha Franklin, which will be performed by Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day, had better be one to remember.
