After significant delays due to heavy rain on Thursday, no golfer in the 144-player field was able to complete the first round before US PGA Tour officials called play for the day just after 5.30pm due to darkness.
Tiger Woods has many fond memories of Riviera Country Club. "Conditions deteriorated quickly, and the fact that we played so little golf in the first round was a big factor in our decision to nullify the scores and cancel the round".
Jordan Spieth was likely happy to have heard the horn sound, signaling the stoppage in play.
"This elevation status, as Jay said, it's 120, so trying to get into the event is going to be a little more hard and you're going to have more players-well, more of the top players playing because of world ranking points", Tiger Woods said about the upgrade in tournament status.
Spieth grabbed five birdies on the rain-softened course while Kang had one bogey, four birdies and an eagle at the par-five 11th.
After getting to 3 under for his round through seven holes and to 10 under for the tournament, Woods could not manage another birdie the rest of the way, playing his last 11 holes in 4 over par and settling for a 1-over-par 72. "Really solid start, but certainly got some good breaks", he said. He hasn't missed a cut this season and took 28th last week at Pebble Beach. I'm just glad to be focusing on one course and not two or three.
"Since then I hit fairways - I hit fairways on the important holes like 12 and 13".
Tiger Woods said Phil Mickelson's success on the PGA Tour has motivated the 14-time major champion. Because the weather presented no danger, players were allowed to finish the hole.
"Interesting rulings, but we're progressing", Rintoul said.
"This has been a long week and we're nearly done", he said.
"I got exhausted; there's no doubt, " Woods said. You've often got to play your way in, which is exactly what Kentucky senior Lukas Euler did on February 11.
"We wish we could play more venues that are classic and simple like this".
The tournament re-started its first round at 4:40 p.m.
Tiger Woods reacts to chipping in for birdie on the 17th hole during The Match: Tiger vs Phil golf match at Shadow Creek Golf Course. So adding a player that has experience and good course form at the Masters can tie into a player with the same resume at the Genesis Open. "I've had to deal with that in the past".
